BREAKING: Outbreak of anti-Semitic violence in Amsterdam: What really happened?

Outbreak of anti-Semitic violence in Amsterdam

The Israeli government announced it would deploy two planes to the Netherlands on Friday to rescue citizens injured in Amsterdam following violent clashes associated with a soccer match between a Dutch team and an Israeli team. Both Israeli and Dutch authorities have described these incidents as antisemitic attacks.

According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, at least ten Israeli citizens were injured, and two others remain missing. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the deployment of the rescue planes and noted that Netanyahu had spoken with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof.

The Dutch police released a statement on Friday explaining that the disturbances, which began on Thursday, occurred in areas where people had gathered, some supporting the Israeli team and others opposing its presence, resulting in heightened tensions.

While the police did not specify what initially triggered the violence, Mr. Schoof issued a statement early Friday condemning the antisemitic attacks on Israelis in Amsterdam as “entirely unacceptable.” He also stated that calm had been restored and assured Mr. Netanyahu that those responsible would be apprehended and prosecuted.

Throughout Thursday evening and into early Friday, hundreds of fans of Israel's soccer club Maccabi Tel Aviv, in Amsterdam to watch their team compete against Ajax, Amsterdam's soccer club, faced repeated attacks, according to the Israeli Embassy in the Netherlands.
